Why (Mg Cl2) is ionic with some covalent characters?

Magnesium chloride is also ionic, but with a more complicated arrangement of the ions to allow for having twice as many chloride ions as magnesium ions. In ionic bond the positive ion pulls the electron density of the anion towards itself and brings about polarisation of the anion. This causes the development of some covalent character in ionic bond.
